Empowering Industry 5.0: Unleashing Human-Centered Innovation with XR5.0

The primary objective of XR5.0 is to establish specific guiding principles and detailed strategies for implementing XR technologies within Industry 5.0 contexts, prioritizing a human-centered approach and fostering the development of innovative “XR-made-in-Europe” solutions. This paradigm aims to catalyze the creation of six pioneering pilot applications with high Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs), spanning domains such as AI-driven product design, remote asset maintenance, workforce training, assembly support, and troubleshooting guidance. These applications will be tested and demonstrated in real-world manufacturing settings.

Central to the XR5.0 paradigm is the integration of human-centered digital twins (DTs), which serve as virtual representations of end-users, capturing their characteristics and contextual nuances. Advanced AI methodologies, including Explainable AI (XAI), Active Learning (AL), Generative AI (GenAI), and Neurosymbolic Learning, will be harnessed to facilitate seamless interaction between humans and AI technologies.

Validation and demonstration of the XR5.0 paradigm will occur through six real-life pilot projects, each leveraging XR5.0 technologies such as human-centered digital twins, AI-driven visualizations, and XR-enabled AI interactions. These pilots will adhere to the XR5.0 reference model and undergo rigorous validation in authentic manufacturing environments.

One key aspect of XR5.0, spearheaded by Instituto Piaget (a project partner from Portugal), involves preparatory activities, including co-creation sessions, for the XR5.0 pilots and use cases. These activities encompass designing system architectures, curating, and managing datasets, mobilizing domain experts across experimentation sites, and facilitating relevant co-creation workshops. Co-creation, a collaborative approach involving stakeholders, users, and relevant parties in product or service development, will be instrumental in ensuring that XR5.0 solutions are tailored to meet end-user needs effectively.

Moreover, the co-creation process aims to enable intuitive and productive interactions between workers and XR technologies while adhering to GDPR principles, including informed consent. Iterative co-creation cycles will be employed to continuously refine XR5.0 applications, leveraging expertise from technical, social sciences and humanities (SSH), and industrial domains.
